LESSON: (Time 3-1/2 minutes).

Bible Verse: Genesis 50:20-21. Scripture used as reference for lesson: Genesis 41:46 - 47.

(1) This is Joseph. Do you remember how Joseph's brothers were mean to him and threw him in a well? (2) Then they sold him to some people from far away so he would have be a slave! The people took Joseph far away to Egypt. (3) Then, one day somebody said that Joseph did something bad. Joseph didn't do it. (Shake head no). But, Joseph was put in jail. Now Joseph was very sad. But one day, God helped Joseph get out of jail. (4) The king had a dream, and nobody could tell him what it meant. But, Joseph could tell the King what his dream meant because God helped him. (5) Joseph told the king: "Your dream means that there will be seven good years, then seven bad years. During the good years, there will be lots of grain to eat. Then, during the seven bad years, there will not be enough grain. The people will be hungry". So, king put Joseph in charge of Egypt! He was in charge of storing up all the grain! (6) The king gave Joseph a beautiful robe, and a necklace and his own ring! He even gave Joseph a wife!

(7 - picture or craft sample) During the seven good years, Joseph helped the people save up lots of grain. He stored the grain in each city. Let's see what Joseph has stored in here. (Open door to barn) Oh! Look at all that grain! Wow! Let's see what's up here? (Open window to barn). Oh, wow! More grain! Lots and lots of grain! But then, just like Joseph said, after the seven good years there was no more grain. The people went to Joseph and whined, "We're hungry! (rub your tummy). Do you have some grain for us to eat?" (8) Joseph said, "Yes! I have lots of grain! So, Joseph sold grain to the people. Now everybody had plenty to eat! The people were so happy that Joseph was helping them!

Soon people from far far away were coming to Joseph to buy grain. One day, Joseph's brothers came to Egypt to buy grain. Joseph knew who his brothers were as soon as he saw them. But, his brothers did not know who Joseph was because Joseph looked different now. He was a lot older, and he wore different clothes now. (Shake head "no"). So Joseph kept it a secret that he was really their brother. Sh-h-h-h! (Put your finger up to your lips). Don't tell Joseph's secret! (Shake head "no"). So Joseph gave his brothers some grain, and they took the grain back home to their father. But soon it was all gone, and they had to go back to Joseph to get more grain.

When they got to Egypt this time, Joseph fed them the best food and treated them really nice! (9) But Joseph could not keep his secret any longer! He told his brothers, "Don't you know who I am? I am Joseph, your brother!" (10) His brothers were so surprised! But, Joseph was not mad at his brothers any more. (Shake head no). Joseph forgave his brothers. He told his brothers they didn't have to be afraid, even though they hurt him a long time ago. Our Bibles tell us what else Joseph told them. (Read Genesis 50:20-21).

(10 again) Now his brothers felt bad for being so mean to Joseph (Bow your head and cover your eyes with your hand). They were sorry that threw him in the well. And, they were sorry that they sold him to be a slave. But Joseph loved his brothers, and he helped them. They went back to Canaan and got their families and their father. They brought them all to Egypt. Joseph was kind to them. He let them live in the best part of Egypt! (11) What a happy day it was when Joseph saw his father again! It had been a long time since Joseph saw his father! They gave each other a big hug! (12 - craft sample) And, God made Joseph's heart soft. Even though Joseph's brothers had been so mean to him, Joseph forgave his brothers. And they all lived together in Egypt, and had lots to eat! THE END Transition: Wasn't that a wonderful story? Let's have snack, and then we can talk more about the story.

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?

Does everybody know what it means to forgive someone? It means that you don't stay mad at them when they hurt you. You give them another chance because you love them.

In the story today, Joseph had a lot of things to forgive his brothers for, didn't he? They were mean to him many times. But, during the time Joseph was in Egypt, he learned to trust God. Even though he was in jail a long time, he knew God was with him. He trusted God to take care of him. He obeyed God, and always tried to do what was right. But, Joseph wasn't perfect either. There were times when Joseph needed to ask God to forgive him too. So, God showed Joseph kindness and forgave him. During the time away from his brothers, God worked in Joseph's heart. He made Joseph's heart soft, so Joseph didn't stay mad at his brothers. Then he forgave his brothers just like God forgave Joseph many times too.

Did you know that God also forgives us when we ask him to? That's right! When we go and pray to God and ask him to forgive us for the wrong things we do, he forgives us. Its like he takes the sin away! Then, its like it never even happened! Well, God wants us to forgive people who hurt to us too. He doesn't want us to keep thinking about how we were hurt. He doesn't want us to stay mad. God wants us to keep our hearts soft so we can keep loving people. So, let's pray and ask God to help us forgive others.

PRAYER: Allow children to take turns praying after you or a helper prays.
