LESSON:

Bible Verse: Psalm 115:12-13 . Scripture used as reference for lesson: Genesis 39 - 41.

(1) Last week, if you were here you heard the story about Joseph: We learned that Joseph's father gave him a special coat that had so many beautiful colors! We also learned how Joseph had 11 brothers who were mean to him. (2) They threw him in a well and then they sold him to some people for money. His brothers said to the people, "We will give you Joseph if you give us some money". (Place some play money on the table). So that is what they did; and Joseph was taken far away. (3) His brothers made up a lie about Joseph, and told their father that a wild animal attacked Joseph. Can everybody show me what a wild animal looks like? (Hold up your hands like claws and show your teeth like a wild animal). Joseph's father was so sad because he thought he had lost his favorite son. (4) But, we know that Joseph was O.K. because God was with Joseph even when bad things happened to him. Now let's see what happens to Joseph next:

After Joseph was sold to the people for money, they took Joseph far, far away. They took him all the way to Egypt! (5) When they got there, Joseph was sold again. A man named Potiphar bought Joseph. He gave them some money (take the play money and place it on the table again) and said, "I want Joseph to come and work for me as my slave". Did you know that Potiphar was a very important man? He helped the king who ruled over all of Egypt! So Joseph went to stay with Potiphar. (Picture 4 again). Soon, Potiphar could see that Joseph was really good at everything he did. Potiphar knew that God was with Joseph, and that God blessed everything Joseph did! Potiphar was so happy with Joseph that he put Joseph in charge of his whole house! Now Joseph had a much better job! Now he got to take care of everything that was Potiphar's, and Potiphar didn't have to worry about anything with Joseph in charge. Everything was going great! Because of Joseph, God blessed Potiphar and everybody in his house! Joseph's was probably starting to feel happy again.

But then one day, everything changed. Potiphar's wife made up mean lies about Joseph. That made Potiphar really mad! Now Potiphar did not trust Joseph anymore. (Shake head "no"). (6) He had Joseph thrown in jail! A jail is where they kept people who did bad things. Joseph didn't really belong there - he didn't do anything wrong. Now Joseph was sad again! But even while Joseph was in jail, God was with Joseph and was kind to him - just like always! And, do you know what happened next? The man in charge of the prison was so happy with Joseph that he put Joseph in charge of all the other people in the jail! He liked Joseph and trusted him to take care of everything there. (6 still) Days and weeks went by, and Joseph was still in jail, but God didn't forget about Joseph. (Shake head "no"). God was with Joseph helping him every day. Joseph worked in the jail for a long, long time. He worked in the jail for more than two years.

(7) Then one day, when the king was sleeping, he had a dream. Can everybody show me what it sounds like when someone is snoring? (Make snoring sounds, tilt your head to the side, placing your hands together under them). When he woke up (lift head and rub your eyes), he was upset because of his dream! He called all of the wise men in Egypt and asked them if they could tell him what his dream meant. But they all just looked confused and said, "We don't know what your dream means." (Shake head "no"). Now the king was even more upset! Who could tell him what his dream meant?

Then one of the king's workers spoke up. (Raise your hand) He said, "Hey! I remember somebody who once told me what my dream meant. His name was Joseph! It was when we were in jail. He told another man what his dream meant too. And everything happened just as Joseph said it would! Except... I did something wrong". Uh-Oh! What do you think he did wrong? This man felt bad now because when he was in jail with Joseph, he got out of jail! He had promised Joseph that he would say some good things about Joseph to try to get Joseph out of jail too. But he forgot all about Joseph! Poor Joseph! Joseph had to stay in jail for two more years because this man forgot all about him. But, God didn't forget about Joseph! (Shake head "no"). God remembered Joseph, even while he was in jail.

(8) So, the king asked his helpers to bring Joseph to him (motion with your hand to 'come here') so that Joseph could tell him what his dream meant. So the helpers went to get Joseph. Joseph washed up, then he shaved off his beard. (Rub your face with your hand, as if shaving). He put on some nice, clean clothes. Then the helpers brought Joseph to the king! The king asked Joseph, "Can you me what my dream means?" Joseph said to the king, "I can't tell you what your dream means (shake head "no"), but God can tell you!" (Point up). God was with Joseph and gave him a special ability to tell the king his dreams. So Joseph told the king that his dream meant: He said his dream meant that there would be seven good years, and then seven bad years. During the seven good years, there would be lots and lots of food. Everybody in Egypt would have plenty to eat. But, then there would be seven bad years, when there would not be enough food. Lots of people in Egypt would be hungry. He also told the king that he should find a wise man, and put him in charge of storing up lots of food during the seven good years, so they would have enough to eat during the seven bad years. Then they would have food when they would really needed it.

(9) The king could see that God had made Joseph very wise (Place your forefinger up to your head), so he put Joseph in charge of the whole palace and all the land of Egypt! (Move your arm in a large arc). The king told Joseph that now everyone would have to do whatever he told them! Joseph would rule! Then the king gave Joseph a ring and dressed him in a beautiful robe! He even gave him a gold chain! And Joseph got to ride around in a chariot. The king even gave Joseph a wife! Now we see that God was causing good things to happen to Joseph! Now everybody thought Joseph was great! Now everybody was bowing down to Joseph, and they would have to do what Joseph told them. Joseph got to be in charge! Joseph trusted the Lord during the bad times, and now God was blessing him with some really good things. THE END.

Transition: Isn't that a happy ending to the story! Next week, we will find out what else happens to Joseph. But for now, let's talk about this part of the story.

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

All of us go through some bad times. Things happen that we don't like. Some things happen and its not even our fault. Sometimes people forget about us and then we feel bad. In our story the king's worker forgot about Joseph and left Joseph in jail when he could've helped get him out. But Joseph knew that God wouldn't forget about him. (Shake head "no"). Even when people forgot about him, Joseph knew that God was still with him, even when he was in jail. God helped Joseph work hard and do the right things even when he was in jail. Joseph relied on God. Then at the right time, God brought Joseph out of jail. Joseph knew that God loved him and that he would help him. Even though sometimes we have to wait a long time for some things, God does not forget us. He will help us. He will always love us.

Listen to what our Bibles tell us (Read Psalm 115:11-14). Sometimes its hard to wait for the bad times to be over. Sometimes we don't want to wait for good things to happen. Joseph had to wait a long, long time to get out of jail. But, then God helped Joseph too: He gave Joseph success in everything he did, and he gave Joseph special abilities. Then God blessed Joseph so much that he made Joseph ruler over the whole land of Egypt! And, God will bless you too! Just trust in him. He is your helper. God will always remember you no matter what happens to you. The End.
