Bible Verse: Acts 7:9 - 14. Other scriptures used as reference: Genesis 37.

(1) In Bible Times, there was a young boy named Joseph. He lived in Canaan with his father Jacob and his 11 brothers! That's a lot of brothers, isn't it? Let's all count to 11 together. (Count on your fingers to 11 with the children). Do any of you come from a big family with lots of brothers or sisters? (Give the children a chance to answer and then continue). Joseph was the youngest of all of his brothers. Joseph's father loved all of his sons, but he loved Joseph more than any of his brothers!

(Picture 2) One day, Joseph's father made him a coat. This coat was not just any old coat. It was a very special, beautiful coat that had lots of colors! (Picture 3) How happy Joseph was as he put on the special coat that his father gave him. When Joseph's brothers saw his special coat, they were very jealous. Jealous means that they wanted what Joseph had. They could see that their father loved him the most. So, Joseph's brothers were very mean to him. They didn't like Joseph at all; and they couldn't say anything nice to him.

One day, far away from home, Joseph's brothers were taking care of their sheep. Let's all pretend to be sheep. Here are our ears. (Place your hands at the sides of your head). What do sheep say? (Give children a chance to answer). Baa-aaa-aaa! Very good. When Joseph's brothers were away, Joseph's father said to him, "I want you to go to your brothers and see how they are doing, and then come back and tell me." Joseph said, "O.K." So, Joseph grabbed his special coat with so many beautiful colors. Now he was ready. Then, he left home and went to go find his brothers. When he was still far away, his mean brothers saw Joseph coming. They started talking about him. They made fun of him and planned how they would get rid of him. On this day they were feeling really, really mean. They decided to throw him into an empty well. A well is a deep hole in the ground where water is kept, but this time there was no water in the well. (Picture 4) When Joseph got to his brothers, they took his beautiful, special coat off of him! Oh no...thought Joseph, what are they going to do now? They grabbed him and threw him into the well with no water, and they just left him there.. Soon some people came from far away. Then Joseph's brothers had another mean idea. They pulled Joseph out of the well and sold him to the people. His brothers said to the people, "We will give you Joseph if you give us some money". So the people paid Joseph's brothers some money to take Joseph away. (Place some play money on the table). Then they took Joseph far away with them to Egypt! Now Joseph would be a slave in Egypt! A slave is someone who lives with another family and works for them. But people are not very nice to slaves most of the time. I bet Joseph was really upset. I don't think he wanted to be a slave. (Shake head "no"). I think he was very sad that his brothers were being so mean to him. I think he was scared too. He was being taken away to a place that he had never been to before, far, far away from home. When would he ever get to see his father again? Let's all wave bye-bye to sad Joseph. (Wave good-bye). Bye-bye, Joseph!

Let's see what Joseph's mean brothers are up to now. They took Joseph's beautiful, special coat and ripped it! Then they dipped it in the blood of a goat! Yucky! (Picture 5) Then they took the yucky coat back to their father and made up a story. They told their father that Joseph had been eaten by wild animals! Can everybody show me what a wild animal looks like? (Hold up your hands like claws and show your teeth like a wild animal). Joseph's father was very upset. He cried for many days. (Rub your eyes like you are crying). Everyone came around him to try to comfort him, but they couldn't comfort him at all. (Shake your head "no"). He was so sad because he thought he had lost the son he loved most! He cried for a long, long time. (Rub your eyes like you are crying again).

But, we know that made-up lie was not the truth, don't we? (Picture 1 again). Joseph really was OK. God was with Joseph. God was taking care of Joseph even though he was far, far away from home. God loved Joseph and he was watching over him. Even though lots of bad things happened to Joseph, God was with him all the time. Next week we will find out what happens to Joseph next. But, for now we know that God loved Joseph and he was keeping him safe. Transition: Let's have snack, and after snack we can talk about the story.

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

Joseph had good things happen to him, and some really bad things too, didn't he? That's just like all of us. Sometimes we get treated real special. Sometimes people are nice to us. Sometimes they give us special gifts. But, sometimes things happen to us that we don't like. (Shake head "no"). Somebody else gets more attention. Or, maybe somebody is mean to us. Maybe they make fun of us for no reason at all. Joseph had brothers who were really mean to him because they were jealous of him. They wanted the attention and special things that Joseph got from their father. It made Joseph really sad when they were mean to him. But, even when Joseph was sad, God was with him. When his brothers threw him in the deep, dark well, he probably couldn't see very far; and no one else could see him. But, God could still see Joseph even if nobody else could. Joseph probably felt all alone, but he wasn't alone. (Shake head "no"). Even though people weren't with him, God was with him, and God was watching over him. God was keeping Joseph safe because he loved him very, very much.

Well, did you know that God loves you just as much as he loved Joseph? That's right. He is watching over you too. He cares about everything that happens to you. You are his special little child. So, the next time you are upset or mad or sad, remember how much God cares. The next time you feel all alone, remember that God is with you; And, if people aren't being nice to you, remember that God is always kind. He knows what is happening to you; And, he cares so much about you. The bad times will end soon. God will bring you some really happy times too. God loves you so much, and he is always your friend. And, do you know what else? When you are in trouble, God loves to hear your prayers! So the next time you are sad, think about Joseph. It will help you remember that God is watching over you, too. He loves for us to pray to him and ask him to help us. He loves to help his precious little children. And, that is what you are to him - his precious little child, each one of you. (Point to each child in the class and say their name). Each one of you is very, very special to God, just like Joseph was. The End.

PRAYER: Allow children to take turns praying after you or a helper prays.
