If you were here last week, you heard the story about David and Jonathan. (1) This is David. (Point to David), and this is Jonathan. (Point to Jonathan). We learned how David and Jonathan promised to be friends always when David had to go away! They also promised to take care of each other's families. (2) In our story today, David is now the king. In those days, there were lots of wars going on. Jonathan and King Saul both died during the war. One day David remembered that he promised Jonathan that he would take care of his family. So David talked to one of Saul's helpers. He asked him if there was anyone in Jonathan's family who was still living. (3) The helper told David that Jonathan had a young son named Mephi-bo-sheth. That's a long name, so we can call him Mephi for short. Mephi was crippled in both feet. That means that he couldn't walk or run like other boys and girls . Mephi had to use use crutches to help him walk. (Point to crutches). I wonder why Mephi couldn't walk? Well, our Bible tells us what happened. During the war, Jonathan and Saul died. Mephi's nurse was afraid because new kings were not very nice to the families of the old kings most of the time. (Shake head no). She wanted to protect Mephi, so she ran and got Mephi so they could hide. But, Mephi fell and got hurt. Poor Mephi! Now Mephi would have to use crutches to walk. Who would take care of Mephi now? His father and grandfather were gone. Well, David wanted to be kind to Mephi. He wanted to help Mephi. So, David asked Saul's helper to bring Mephi to him.

So Mephi was brought to King David. When Mephi saw David he was afraid that David would hurt him. After all, David was the king - and kings could do anything they wanted. (4) But, instead, King David was kind to Mephi! He treated him like a king's kid! He invited Mephi come and live with him. And, David made sure that Mephi knew that he could stay with him always! He even told Mephi that he could come and sit at the dinner table next to him. Let's pretend that we are eating with David and Mephi. (Bring hand to mouth and make chomping noises). David asked some of the workers to grow vegetables for Mephi because he could not do that himself. David loved Mephi so much! It didn't matter to David that Mephi couldn't walk. (Shake head no). David hardly even noticed. He just saw all the other special things about Mephi. He knew that God made Mephi in a very special way. He knew that Mephi was precious to God. Mephi was very special to David too. David took very good care of Mephi and loved him as his own son! (5) Now look how happy Mephi is! Now Mephi has lots of good food to eat. And, Mephi feels so special because now he is part of the king's family! He didn't do anything to deserve this special treatment. But, King David was just kind because he was showing him the same kindness that God shows to everyone! God was kind to David, and now David was being kind to Mephi! Do you think Mephi said "Thank you" to David for loving him so much? I do. Now lets talk about the story. The End.

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

Did you like that story? I did too. Mephi understand why David was kind to him since he couldn't walk. But David was kind to Mephi. He invited Mephi to live with him, and treated Mephi like a King's kid! David knew that God made Mephi special. And, he knew that God thought Mephi was worth a lot! Did you know that there is someone who thinks you are worth a lot too? God does! Maybe you wish you were different. (6) Maybe you feel bad if you can't walk or run like other children. Some children can't use their arms. (7) Some children have to wear glasses, and some can't see at all. Some children have trouble learning or paying attention. But you know what? God loves you all, just as he loves everybody! He made you in a very special way. You are so precious to God! He loves you so much! And, even if you wish you were different, God has a great plan for you! Just like David cared for Mephi, God will care for you! He will treat you like his special King's kid! And that's not just for a little while. That's for always!

Even though Mephi couldn't walk, David loved Mephi! God is so kind to us, even more kind than David was to Mephi! God made everything in the world just for us. (Point to pictures as you say the words). (8) He gives us people to care about us. He gives us the sunshine and rain. He gives us the Bible so we can learn about God. He gives us toys to play with, and art supplies to draw with. He gives us friends to have fun with. God is very kind to us, isn't he? We have a lot of things to thank God for!

David invited Mephi to be part of the David's family. Did you know that God wants us to call him Father and be part of his family too? Mephi was invited to eat all his meals with David. David wanted to talk with Mephi every day. God also wants you to talk to him every day. He loves for you to go to him and talk to him. God is always there for us. Anytime we need to talk to him, we can just call on him! Let's pray right now and thank God for being so kind.

PRAYER: Allow children to take turns praying after you or a helper prays.
