How many of you have heard someone call your name, but you were so busy doing something that you really weren't listening? (1) Today our Bible story is about a little boy, named Samuel, who heard someone calling his name. (Point to Samuel). But, this time, Samuel was listening. I wonder who was calling Samuel? Let's lsten closely and we will find out. When Samuel was just about your age he went to live with a man named Eli in God's house. Samuel was Eli's helper. The Lord was with Samuel as he grew. As Samuel grew older, people liked him a lot! God was pleased with Samuel too!

(2) One night, it was bedtime, so Samuel went to bed. But, this night was different than most nights. This time, when Samuel was lying down he heard someone call his name. (3) He listened close. (Cup your ear). "Samuel, Samuel!" the voice said. It must be Eli calling me, Samuel thought. So, Samuel pulled back his covers, jumped out of bed, (4) and went to Eli's room. He said to Eli, "Here I am. You called me?" But Eli did not call Samuel. (Shake head no). Eli told Samuel to go back to bed. So Samuel went back to his room, jumped in bed, and (2) laid down (Tilt head, close eyes, and lay head on hands).

(3) But, soon, Samuel heard someone call his name again. Samuel listened close. (Cup your ear). "Samuel, Samuel!" the voice said. Who could it be? It must be Eli. So again, Samuel pulled back his covers, jumped out of bed, (4) and went to Eli's room. (Say it a little stroner) "Here I am. You called me?" Samuel said to Eli again. "No, Samuel, I did not call you. (Shake your head no). Go back to bed." So, again, Samuel went back to his room, jumped in bed and (2) laid down. (Tilt head, close eyes, and lay head on hands).

One more time, (3) Samuel heard someone calling his name, so Samuel listened close. (Cup your ear). "Samuel, Samuel!" the voice said. So, one more time, Samuel got up, pulled back his covers and (4) went to Eli's room. (Say it a little stronger) "Here I am. You called me?" By now, Eli knew that it was God who was calling Samuel. Eli told Samuel,"Go back to bed, Samuel. But this time, if you hear your name, say, 'Speak Lord. Your servant is listening'. So one more time, (2) Samuel went back to his room, jumped in bed and laid down. (Tilt head, close eyes, and lay head on hands).

(3) Again, Samuel heard his name. Samuel listened close. (Cup your ear). "Samuel, Samuel!", God called. But this time when Samuel heard his name, he said, "Speak Lord, your servant is listening". Then God spoke to Samuel and told him some very special things. The next morning, Eli asked Samuel what God had told him the night before. And, Samuel told him everything that God said. And, all the things that God had told Samuel came true! And, as Samuel grew up, God was with Samuel every day. Sometimes God would come and speak to him. And, God told him special things every time. THE END.

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

In our story, God spoke to Samuel and told him some special things. Did you know that God speaks us, and tells us special things too? (5) God tells us special things in the Bible. The Bible is the very special book that God gave us. The Bible is full of God's words. The Bible is God's special book. (3) In the story, Samuel listened close when God was speaking to him so he would be sure to hear every word God told him. If we listen close when someone is reading the Bible to us, we can learn what God is telling us too! (5) And, just think -- soon you will be able to read the Bible for yourself! Since our Bible is God's special book, we want to take good care of our Bibles. If we treat it nice, it will last a long time. Some of us even like to have a special place for our Bible. Then when we grow up a little more, we can get a Bible for older kids. In a little while, we can each make a cover for our own Bible so it doesn't get dirty. You can color your very own cover for your own special Bible!

PRAYER: Allow children to take turns praying after you or a helper prays.
