Intro: (1) We have been learning about all the things the first church did together. (Read Acts 2:42). They spent time learning together, worshiping together, sharing together, and eating together. And...there is one more thing they liked to do together. (2, 3 -people praying) Let's see what they are doing now. (Open window flap). They are praying together! They prayed all the time! They prayed when they were glad. They prayed when they were sad. They prayed when they didn't know what to do. They prayed when they wanted to say "Thank you!" They prayed when they were feeling contrite. They prayed morning, noon and night! They prayed when they were feeling upset. They prayed first thing, and didn't fret.

(4) Before we continue with the story, let's talk about what do you do when you are in upset. When you are in trouble, do you pout or scream? Do you go have some yummy ice cream? Do you go look for something to hit? Do you pound your fists and throw a fit? (Let children answer). Who do you run to for help when you are in trouble? (Let children answer). Well, its good to go to our parents or friends for help. But, did you know there is someone more powerful that we can go to? Let's listen to the story and we will find out who that is.

(8 -Peter with arm down) Peter was one of Jesus' friends who was part of the very first church. Peter loved to teach the people about Jesus! One day Peter got into trouble even though he didn't do anything wrong. (5) He got thrown into jail because mean King Herod didn't want anybody to teach about Jesus! And King Herod put tight chains around Peter's hands. (Put chain on Peter's hands and place him behind bars of jail). King Herod kept guards there to watch Peter day and night to make sure he didn't run away. While Peter was in jail, I wonder what all the people of the church were doing? (2,3 again) Let's look and see. (Open doors). Oh, look! They were praying! (Read Acts 12:5). They weren't just praying a little bit. They knew Peter was in trouble, so they were praying as hard as they could. They prayed and prayed! Then they prayed some more! Even late at night when most people were sleeping, some of them were still praying. And, we know God hears the prayers of those who pray. Let's see what happened next:

(6) One night while Peter was asleep in jail, God sent an angel from heaven. The angel woke up Peter and said, "Hurry! Get dressed and come with me!" When Peter got up, the chains fell off his hands! (Take chains off Peter's hands and bring arm down, and stick on angel page).

(2,3 again) Now let's see what is happening back at the church. (Open window). Look! The people are still praying. And, they are praying very hard! They were praying and praying! Then they prayed some more. I think God is going to answer their prayers very soon! Let's see what Peter is doing now.

(6,8 again) The angel led Peter out of the jail. Then, poof! (Fold angel back, out of sight), the angel was gone! Now what would Peter do? Peter decided to go to Mary's house. (7,8 - Peter) He knocked on the door. Knock, knock, knock! (Let's all make knocking sounds. Lead children to knock on a table).

(2,3 again) Let's look inside the house again. Look! Peter's friends are still praying for him! (7,8 -girl) A little girl named Rhoda came to open the door. (Stick Rhoda sticker by door, and place Peter behind door). But, she was so happy when she heard Peter's voice that she forgot to open the door! She went back to tell the others it was Peter, but nobody believed her! But Peter kept knocking on the door. Knock, knock, knock! (Lead children to knock on a table again). They opened the door and (Open door) they could see that it was really Peter! Peter said, "Sh-h-h-h, be very quiet". Then he whispered to them (whisper) and told them how the Lord had sent an angel to rescue him from jail. (2,3 again) God had heard the prayers of Peter's friends! Can anybody tell me how God answered their prayers? (Let children answer).Yes! God loved the people so much that he sent an angel to help Peter! Now Peter is so happy to be back with his friends! And, now Peter's friends are so glad they prayed! God does great things when we pray! Did you like the story? Let's have snack, then we will talk about when we should pray.

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

(9) How much do you think we should pray? (Let children answer). Our Bible has the answer for us. James 5 tells that we should pray lots of times! We should when someone is in trouble. We should pray for those who are sick. And, we should pray when we need God to forgive us.

Do you know why God wants us to pray to him? Our Bibles tell us the answer: (Read Isaiah 30:18). He loves to show us his love! God cares about everything that happens to us. He loves to help us. He loves to comfort us. And, he loves to forgive us too.

Do you think we are bothering God when we go and pray to him? (Let children answer). No. God loves for us to come to him and tell him all about our day. He is never too busy for us! (Read Psalm 116:1-2). We can talk to God anytime at all! Here is a rhyme to help us remember. (Actions on Activities page). (10) We can pray while we are playing with our friends. And when the hard work never seems to end. We can pray again to thank him for our food. We can pray when someone didn't mean to be rude. (11) We can pray before we go to sleep at night, and again when we see the morning light! We can pray in winter, spring, summer or fall. We can pray to the Lord any time at all!

Good things happen when we pray! That's because God hears our prayers, and he loves to help us. Let's pray right now and thank God for hearing our prayers.

PRAYER: Allow children to pray after adult prays.
