LESSON: Helping at Church! (Pretend Play Activities included in Lesson).

(1) For the last few weeks, we have been learning about the first church. The first church was Jesus' friends who met together in Jerusalem to pray and worship God. (2) We also learned about Peter and how he taught all the people. Peter was very important to the first church. Sometimes we think that the most important person at church is the pastor, or the ones who teach. Our pastor is Pastor _____. Pastor _____ is pretty important, isn't he? But, did you know that you are just as important as Pastor _____ . And you are just as important as the teachers and leaders! You're the ones who can help each other obey God! (Point to all the children in a circular motion). Today we will learn about someone in the first church who helped the people obey God! Listen close and we will find out who that was.

(3) Did you ever try to do something, but you got distracted? Or maybe you started to do a big job, but you got tired? That's what is happening with Toby. His father promised Toby he would take him to get ice cream if he cleaned up his room! So, he is trying to finish as best he can. But his room is really messy. And, Toby is getting tired. There's so much stuff to put away! I think he forgot his dad's promise. I wonder what would help him finish cleaning his room? Maybe he needs someone to encourage him. That means maybe he needs someone to help him to keep going (4) Maybe if someone helped him remember his father's promise, that would help him to keep going. And, Toby is not very strong. (3 again, point to teddy bear). I think he might need someone help him carry the big things too, like that big teddy bear. I think that would help him obey his father too.

It was like that in the first church. The people in the first church needed someone to encourage them to obey God, their Father in heaven. They needed someone to help them remember God's promises. And, they needed someone to help with the big things, since they were weak. (5) Our Bibles tell us that there was someone to help them! His name was Barnabas. Let's read about how Barnabas helped the people. (Read Acts 11:23-24). Barnabas was good; he obeyed God and did what God said. And, Barnabas had lots of faith! He believed God's promises! Barnabas saw all the good things the people of his church were doing! And, he saw how they loved God! That made him very happy! So Barnabas encouraged the people to keep obeying God! I wonder how he did that? One way he might have encouraged the people was to help them remember God's promises. We have learned some of God's promises in our class: Like the promise God gives us to always love us and be with us. Do you think it will help us obey God if we remember God's promises? (Give children a chance to answer). I do too. Later we will hear some more of God's great promises!

Another way Barnabas encouraged the people was to show them God's love by helping them. He loved to help those who were weak! Everybody is weak sometimes. (6) We are weak when we are sick, and when we are hurt. (7) We feel weak when we are sad. We can even feel weak if we feel like nobody cares. But when somebody helps us, we feel their love and care. When somebody cares, it helps us remember that God cares too. And, that helps us to keep obeying God! Did you know that you can encourage others too?

Let's see what our Bible says: (Read Acts 20:35). We can help those who are weak, like the people did in the first church. There's lots of things we can do to help the weak even when we are young! (8) We could make a card for someone who is sick. We could help someone when they are hurt. (9) We can help cheer others up when they are sad. (10 ) We can help them do things they can't do. (11) This little boy is helping the one who can't walk. (Point to the boy pushing the wheelchair). (12) And, we can help others not feel so alone by being their friend! Let's take a break and have snack. Then we will learn another way to encourage each other too.

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

(13, 14) Today we learned that Barnabas encouraged others by telling them God's promises. Our Bible tells us to encourage each other like Barnabas did wherever he went. (Read 1 Thes. 5:11) (13,14) This is Barnabas Bear. He will help us remember God's promises! (Let children take turns turning the pages of the heart booklet on Barnabas Bear, except the last one for the end. Read each one to the children, and talk about how exciting or great each promise is, ie. I'm so glad God is near us when we pray. That makes us feel safe and loved, doesn't it?).

When we share God's promises with each other, we help each other know how much God loves them. And, we help each other obey God! Now we have one more verse to encourage us all! (Read Hebrews 6:10). You will each get to make a Barnabas Bear for your craft. But, first let's pray.

PRAYER: Allow children to pray after adult prays.
