LESSON: Close to God's Heart! (Worship)

(1) Last week we learned about Jesus' friends - how they met together in Jerusalem to pray after Jesus went back up to heaven. Did you know that those friends of Jesus who met together in Jerusalem were the first church? (2) Sometimes we think of church as the church building. But, a church is also the group of people who love Jesus, who come together to worship God. Let's see what our Bible says. (Read Acts 2:46a) (3) The people of the very first church met together every day to worship God! Jesus' friends took time out every day to worship God. They met together to worship because they wanted to get close to the heart of God. They wanted to learn what God is like and be like him, because they knew how much he loved them! Did you know that you and I, right here, (make a circular motion, pointing to everyone) are also the church! We are part of God's church! And, God loves us just like he loved the church in Bible Times! I wonder how the people in that very first church got close to the heart of God? Maybe we could do the things they did, so we can be close to God too! Let's talk about that.

This is what our Bible says: (Read Acts 2:43). The people felt great respect for God. That means they knew how great God was! They were excited about all the great things God was doing! (4) Even today, God still does great things among us! And, God wants us to be excited about all the great things he is doing today! Let's look at some great things God does. (5) Did you ever see a gorgeous sunset or a beautiful rainbow after the rain? When we see it, it takes our breath away! We say, "Wow! Look at what God made!" Did you know that every time we come to worship God he wants us to feel like that about him? He wants it to take our breath away when we remember how wonderful he is! He wants us to think about his great love for us! He wants us to think about how patient he is when he forgives us over and over again! (4 again) He wants us to take time out each day to be with him, and let him know how great we think he is!

(6) Remember how we looked through the magnifying glasses when you first came to class? The magnifying glass made things look bigger. It showed us how things look up close. It helped us see what is really there, so we will remember the things we don't see. Did you know that God wants us to mag-ni-fly him too? That means he wants us to know how big he is! (Hold hands wide apart). Let's all make a big a space as we can. (Hold hands wide apart). And, God wants us to remember how great he is! (Lift hands up high). He doesn't want us to forget about him. Instead, he wants us to remember that he is here with us, doing great things! This verse tells us more: (Read Psalm 34:3). When we magnify the Lord, we tell him all the great things we know about him! We tell him how loving and kind he is! We tell him how good he is! (7) We tell him how great he is to make the whole world, and each one of us! (Point to each child in a circular motion). We tell him he is the one who deserves our praise!

(8) When we worship God, we are coming close to his heart. We are taking time out to be with only him because we know how much we need him each and every day. Let's listen to what else our Bible says: (Read Psalm 95:6-7) (9) When we worship God, we remember how small and weak we are, like little sheep. We tell God that we want him to lead us, and we will follow him, like a little sheep follows close behind its shepherd. And we do what he tells us to do. We tell him we are so glad that he lets us be his little children. He is the one who made us, and we are so thankful for that. And we love him so much!

Its good to worship God, but what can we do to make sure our heart is ready to worship him? God says he wants us to worship him in spirit and in truth. Before we worship, we can tell God the truth about the things we have done wrong. We don't want to pretend everything is o.k. when its not. (Shake head no), because (10) God knows everything anyways. When we tell him how sorry we are, he promises to forgive us. (4 again)Then we will be so happy when he forgives us! Then we will be ready to take part in worship and singing, and come close to the heart of God.

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

(11) When you have a best friend, you just want to spend a lot of time with that friend. You start to copy your friend because you like her, and you want to be like her. Did you know that if we spend lots of time being close to God, we will start to become more like him too? When we come close to God, he helps us not sin. (Read Acts 2:28). None of us really wants to sin. We feel bad when we do bad things. (12) But, when we spend time being close to God, he teaches us how to live right. I changes our hearts. When we spend time with God each day, we become a little more like him each day! I am so glad that our great God promises to come close to us when we come close to him! And he promises to do that every time! Let's pray and worship our great God together.
