(1) Intro: Did you mom or dad ever tell you had to wait for a surprise? Maybe your mom is making a surprise in the kitchen. And it smells so-o-o good! But she tells you that you have to wait because the surprise is still baking in the oven. So you sit down and your wait. And... you wait some more. When will the surprise ever get here, you wonder? And you wait...and wait... Then, finally! Your surprise comes! Its chocolate chip cookies! Now you are so glad that you waited! Our Bible story today is about a surprise Jesus had for his friends. They had to wait for their surprise too. Listen close, and we will find out what the surprise was.

Before Jesus went back up to heaven, he told his friends to go wait in Jerusalem for a surprise. Jesus promised to send them a special friend - someone who would help them! I wonder who this special friend was? Jesus gave them a clue: He said this special friend would help them not be afraid to tell others all about Jesus. (3,4,5) The friend would help them tell people all over the world about Jesus!

So after Jesus went back up to heaven in the clouds, Jesus' friends went to Jerusalem to wait, just like Jesus told them. (6,7) Peter, James, and John were there, along with some women and other friends of Jesus. While they were waiting, they prayed. (Place hands together in prayer). They waited.... (Place elbow on table and rest chin on hand), and waited....and waited some more. Then, finally, something began happening. All of a sudden there was the sound of a loud, rushing wind. It blew all around the room! Whoos-s-sh! Whoos-s-sh! (Throw arm from side to side). Let's all make the sound of the wind. Whoos-s-sh! Whoos-s-sh! (Place flames above each man's head). Then they could see little flames of fire flickering above each person's head. It sure looked pretty! But, it did not hurt them. (Shake head no). Let's make flames of fire above our heads (Show children how to place hands together above their heads and move fingers to make it look like flickering fire). Then each of Jesus' friends started speaking in a different language that they didn't know! Remember the different languages we heard this morning? It sounded like a whole bunch of different languages all mumble-jumbled together at the same time! I wonder what they were saying? They were telling about all the wonderful things God has done! Well, the people who lived in Jerusalem heard the loud noise. They were curious. So they came to see what was going on. They saw Jesus' friends each speaking in different languages - languages they didn't understand. It didn't make sense to them.

(8) But, Peter knew what was happening, so he spoke right up. He explained it to the crowd: He told them what they were seeing and hearing was happening because Jesus had sent the Holy Spirit! (8) Then, he told them how Jesus died on the cross and was raised back to life! He told them Jesus was now in heaven with God, our Father. And he told them that Jesus had sent the Holy Spirit! And, now the Holy Spirit was the one who gave each one the ability to speak in a different language!

Remember when Jesus told his friends he would send a surprise? He said he would send them a helper who would help them tell others about Jesus! Can anyone tell me who the helper was that Jesus promised to send? (Let children answer). Yes! The Holy Spirit! And, now the Holy Spirit was helping Peter not be afraid. The Holy Spirit helped Peter tell the people all about Jesus! (9) And the Holy Spirit will help you not be afraid too. He will help you tell others about Jesus too! Let's have our snack and we can talk more later.

(10) Did you ever try to walk in a dark room? Its hard because you can't see where you're going. You have to be careful so you don't stumble. (11) But, once you turn on the lamp, it lights helps you see where you are going! Did you know that God wants us to be like that light for others? Let's listen to this verse: (Read Acts 13:47).

One time Jesus was talking to his friends he told them that they were to be like a light to the people of the world: He told them: (12,7) (Read Matt. 5:15-16). (Place basket sticker over first lamp, and point to each lamp as it is stated in the verses). How do we let our light shine? (13) By showing God's love to others and (9 again) telling them about Jesus! Jesus has been so kind to us! He helped us know him as our friend. And, he wants us to be kind and help others know Jesus too! Its like people are in the dark when they don't know Jesus. But, when we tell them about Jesus, we are like a light that helps them see and understand!

(8 again) Remember how the the Holy Spirit helped Peter tell the people about Jesus? The same Holy Spirit will help us not be afraid! The Holy spirit will help us tell others about Jesus - even people who live all over the world! (3, 4, 5 - Add kid stickers as you are speaking). Who wants to help me put the children stickers on the world? (Let children take turns adding stickers). The Holy Spirit will help us speak right out. (13 again) And he will help us show love to others! That's how we can be a light to others! (10 again) What a great friend and helper the Holy Spirit is! Let's thank God for the Holy Spirit, and ask him to help us tell others about Jesus.
