Concepts Children Learn:

Prep: Mark you bible with the memory verse: Supplies needed: Blue popcicles, small mirrors (one for each child and yourself), handi-wipes, Stand-up Bible Bear covered with contact paper, blue washable marker. Have snack time before lesson. Give each child a blue popsicle (or other snack that makes their mouth or teeth colored). During the lesson, you will also be handing out the mirrors. Make Craft pages for lesson: Color Bible Bear's mouth area blue. See Craft Page for directions. Print the b&w or color story pages 1bw, 1color, 2bw, 2color, 3bw, 3color, 4bw, 5bw, 5color, 6bw, 6color, 7bw, 7color, 8bw, 8color.

The numbers in parentheses tell you what Story Page to hold up while you are telling the story. (You don't need to read the words on the actual story pages. They are for use as posters or coloring pages). Only read words that are not in parentheses for the lesson. The words in parentheses tell you what actions you do.

Key Bible Verse: Psalm 119:73. James 1:22-24. Other Scriptures used as reference: Psalm 119:165; Psalms 119:57-64; Psalm 119:67, 71; 2 Timothy 2:15.
LESSON: My Bible is like a Mirror! (Combined with Circle Talk Time)
Bible Bear: (1) Is everybody done with their popcicles? I want to start the lesson.

(Point to Bible Bear) Does everybody remember Bible Bear? He is here to help us with our lesson. (Laugh).

Bible Bear: What's so funny?
Teacher: Well, here's a mirror. I will show you. (Hold up a mirror to Bible Bear, and hand out mirrors to each child). Let's all look in our mirrors. Open your mouth and see what color it is.
Bible Bear: (Laughs) Ah-h-h! My face is all blue! Its from the blue popsicle! And, look at the kids! They have blue on their faces too! I guess we better go wash our faces! (Help children wipe off their faces and hands. But, Bible Bear forgets to wash off his face). There, now we are clean! I'm sure glad we had those mirrors! (Looks in mirror). Uh-oh. Look at me! I forgot to wash my face because I was thinking about how funny everybody else looked! I still have blue all over my face!
Teacher: (Laugh). Here, lets wipe off your face too. (Take wipe and erase blue marker off Bible Bear's face, then hold mirror up to him again). There, now you look much better.
Bible Bear: Thanks for showing me what I looked like! If you didn't hold up the mirror for me, I would still be walking around with a blue face!
Teacher: That reminds me of a bible verse. (Read James 1:22-24). Our Bible is like a mirror. It shows us when something is wrong. If we didn't have our Bibles, we wouldn't know what we are doing wrong. (2) But, when we listen to God's words in the Bible, and do what the Bible says, it shows us how to change our actions. (3) (Point to Bible Bear in picture). But, If we don't do what our Bible says, that's like Bible Bear when he forgot that I still had a blue face after I looked in the mirror!
Bible Bear: Yeah, I was like the one who forgets what the Bible say, and then they are not helped. Hm-m-m...What happens if we don't do what God says in the Bible?
Teacher: (4) Well, the same thing that happens when we stumble and fall down? What happens when we fall down? (Give children a chance to answer). Yes, we get hurt. When we don't do what God says, we hurt ourselves, and we are sad. (5, 4 again) Something that we learn from our Bible is to love others. But, we also need to do what it says. Let's look at these pictures. Does it look like these children are doing what the Bible says? Are they showing love to each other? (Let children answer). No. This little girl is not sharing her toys. (Point to girl hiding toy). This little boy is not helping the boy who fell down. (Point to boy turned away). They are like the ones who look in the mirror and forget what was wrong. So they are sad.
Teacher: But we will be happy when we do what God says. Our Bibles show us what is right or wrong. Just like when we looked in the mirror, and it showed us something wrong. It showed us that we needed to wash our blue faces. (6, 7) Let's see what the children are doing now. Are they loving each other now? (Give children a chance to answer). Yes. The little girl is sharing her toys now! (Point to girl). Sharing a great way to love others! And, the little boy is helping now! (Point to boy). Helping is another great way to show love to others! Now they remember what God tells us in the Bible! See how happy they are? They don't have to be sad anymore because they are doing what God says in the Bible!
Bible Bear: (Read Psalm 119:73) (8) God made us and he knows everything about us! And he wants the best for us because he loves us so much! He doesn't want us to be sad and guilty. He wants us to be close to him! That's why he gave us the Bible!
Teacher: That's right , Bible Bear! And, God will help us to do what he says, when we ask him to help us! Let's all pray now and ask God to help us do what he tells us in the Bible.

CIRCLE TIME: (Combined with lesson).

PRAYER: Allow children to pray after adult prays,.
