LESSON: My Bible is a Light! (Combined with Pretend Play Activity).
Teacher: Intro: (1) Let's pretend we are going on a walk in the forest! Here's what our feet sounds like (Pat lap). Let's all make the sound of our feet together. (Encourage children to pat their laps with you). (Have assistant turn off one light or dim the lights). Uh-oh. Its getting darker, we better hurry. (Pat laps faster). (Have assistant turn out all lights). Uh-oh. Now its getting really dark. We better run! (Pat laps really fast). But, there's only one problem! I can't see the path! (Shake head no). Its too dark. We might get hurt if we walk in the dark! Does anybody have a flashlight? (Assistant says, I do!" and gives you the flashlight). Oh, I'm so glad you have a light! (Shine light in the dark). The light will help us see the path! Now we can see! (2). (Assistant growls like a bear). Oh-no! its a bear! We better run! (Pat laps really fast). Hurry! We're almost home! (Pat laps really fast, then stop suddenly). Ah-h-h! Safe at last! I'm sure glad we had our flashlight! But I wonder what would've happened if we didn't have our light? (Give children a chance to answer). I have an idea. Let's ask Bible Bear too!
Teacher: (3) This is Bible Bear. he has been helping us the last few weeks. Bible Bear do you have any answers for us?
Bible Bear: (Tells the answers that the children miss). We might get too close to the bear den! We might get lost without our flashlight. Or we might trip and fall if we can't see the path. Or, we might even step on a snake!
Teacher: Oooh! Yes! Sometimes we really need a light, don't we? Did you know our Bibles are like a light too? (Hold up Bible). Let's have Bible Bear read Psalm 119:105.
Bible Bear: (Reads Psalm 119:105). You were right! Our Bibles are like a light!
Teacher: Bible Bear, can you tell us how our Bibles are light a light?
Bible Bear: (2 again) Well, the Bible tells us things we shouldn't do. Just like if we shine a light in a dark forest (shine flashlight), the light shows us places not to go, like near the bear's den). .
Teacher: Ooh! Yes. We don't want to get too close to the bears by accident! (Shake head no).
Bible Bear: So our Bible is like a light in the dark! It tells us not to do bad things that hurt us!
Teacher: Very good! (4) The Bible also tells us do good things to do. Its like a light that shines on the right path - it tells us the right way to go too! It tells us how much God loves us, (5) and tells us about things like sharing and caring! Its like a bright light in a dark forest that shows us the right path to walk on!

Bible Bear: Without our Bibles, it would be like we are in the dark. We wouldn't know which way to go!

Teacher: Exactly! Let's all put our hands over our eyes. (Place hands over eyes). Ooh! Its dark! I can't see!
Bible Bear: I get scared when I can't see!
Teacher: I get scared too. (6) But just like light gives us comfort when it helps us see, the promises in the Bible give us comfort too. They make us feel better because we know that God always keeps his promises! When we remember the promises that God tells us in the Bible, they help us not feel scared. Bible Bear, can you read a promise for us?
Bible Bear: Um-m...o.k. (Reads Psalm 23:4).
Teacher: Oh, that's a great promise! It always makes me feel better! God promises to be with us when we're scared in the dark!
Bible Bear: (7) So, the Bible is like a night-light too! It helps us feel better when we're scared (Point to Bible), just like a night-light in our room helps us not feel scared at night! (Point to night-light).
Teacher: Very good, Bible Bear! Yes! Now we have some questions.

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

(Turn out lights and plug in night-light). The Bible is like our night-light. So when we feel scared, what should we do? (Give children a chance to answer). (7) We could ask our mom or dad to read a Bible story to us. God has lots of promises that he wants us to know. God tells us promises because he loves us so much. He doesn't want us to feel scared. (Shake head no). He wants us to know that he is with us. And, he wants us to know he is there to help us. (2) And, when we don't know what we should do, that would be like if we are in a dark forest. We can't see which way to go. Then what would we do? (Give the children a chance to answer, and hold up flashlight). Very good. We would turn on our flashlight. (Turn on flashlight). The flashlight would light the path and show us which way to go. Its the same with our Bibles. (Hold up children's Bible in other hand). We could ask our moms or dads, or a teacher, what the Bible tells us to do. God loves us so much that he gives us the Bible to help us every day! Let's stop now, and thank God for giving us the Bible.
