LESSON: My Bible is Precious! (Activity and Lesson combined).
Teacher: Intro: (As children come and sit down for the lesson, tell them:) There is a treasure chest hidden in the classroom, that has something very precious in it. As they are looking for it, make comments like:) I sure hope somebody finds it. Its something we all need very much. Its something I need every day. Its a special gift from God to us. (If they aren't finding it within a few minutes, give them hints. When someone finds it say with excitement:) There it is! I'm so glad you found it! Let's see what's in the treasure chest! (Let children open treasure chest). Oh, look at all that gold and silver! Let's see what else is in the treasure chest! (Let children dig through the paper money. Continue when they find the Bible). There it is! This is what we were looking for! The Bible is the thing that is so precious! Let's all come and sit down, and (1) Bible Bear is here to help us learn why the Bible is so precious!
Bible Bear: I can't wait to find out! Tell us... what is so special about the Bible?

The Bible is the words that God spoke to us a long time ago! And, they are still just as important for us today. Let's listen to this verse and it will explain: (Read Psalm 119:73). (2) Since God made us, he knows everything about us. And, he knows just what we need. God is so good! And, he loves us so much, that he gives us everything we need to be like him. And, he shows us what he is like through the words in the Bible! (Point to the Bible).

Bible Bear Well, I want to be loving and kind like God, so I'm going to pay attention when my mom reads my Bible to me!
Teacher: Very good! That's exactly what Timothy did!
Bible Bear: Who's Timothy?
(3) Timothy was a little boy in the Bible. Timothy's mother and grandmother helped him learn about God. They read the Bible to him and taught him how to pray. They knew how important the Bible is. Then when he was older, Timothy learned from a teacher named Paul. Timothy helped Paul in his work of teaching the Bible to others. And, then he grew up to teach Bible stories too! Paul knew that when we do what the Bible says, it brings joy to our heart. That means we are happy on the inside. Paul also knew that we need the Bible to teach us. And, he knew that we need the Bible to make us wise.
Bible Bear: What does wise mean?
Teacher: It means you learn from God, and do what God says in the Bible. (4) In Proverbs 2, we read this: (Read Proverbs 2:1-5).
Bible Bear: What does that verse mean?
Teacher: (4, Point to child searching). We were all searching so hard for the hidden treasure chest. God wants the Bible to be just as special to us as that treasure chest was. And, God promises to be found by everyone who seeks him with their whole heart. (4, Point to child listening). And, one way we can seek God is listening close to Bible lessons. When we listen close, and pay attention to God's words in the Bible, he teaches us all about who he is. And, he makes us wise.
Bible Bear : So that's why we treat our Bibles as if they were a hidden treasure! (Read 2 Timothy 3:14). So now we know how important it is to keep on paying attention when we hear Bible stories. And, when we get older, we can read it for ourselves! I can't wait until I can read my Bible all by myself!
Teacher: (5) And, you will learn so many precious things from God in the Bible! Each verse in the Bible is like a precious little piece of gold! Psalms 119:72 says this: (Read Psalms 119:72)
Bible Bear: Wow! Thousands of pieces of silver or gold! That's a lot of money! But, the Bible is even more special than that!
Teacher: That's right! Listen to this verse: (Read Psalm 19: 9b - 10). (6) We can be sure that everything we learn in the Bible is good and right. The Bible is a precious treasure that God gives to us - just because he loves us so much! Transition: Let's have snack, then we can talk more about our Bibles.
CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

I'm going to give each of you a chance to answer this question: If you had lots and lots of money, what would you buy? (Let each child give an answer if they would like to participate). Very good. Thank you all for your answers. Today we learned that the Bible is so precious. It is worth more than all of those things! Its so precious because it is the words that God said. Its the words that he wants us to know! That's why lots of people take time to read their Bibles every day. Learning God's words gives us joy. Does anybody remember what joy is? (Give children a chance to answer). Yes, that is like when we are happy on the inside. We are happy because we know God loves us even when we have problems. When we listen to Bible stories, we learn all the good things that God wants us to know! Our Bibles are a precious treasure that God gave us because he loves us so much! As we get older, we learn more and more how precious our Bibles are. Let's all pray and thank God for our Bibles now.

PRAYER: Allow children to pray after adult pray.
