LESSON: Friendly Mary, Fussy Martha

Intro: (1) This is Mary and Martha. They were sisters. Mary and Martha were friends of Jesus. One day, Jesus and his friends came to Martha's house. Martha and Mary were so glad to see Jesus! Martha thought it would be great to fix Jesus and his friends something to eat. (2) So, right away she got busy and started cooking a yummy dinner. "I must hurry. There is so much to do!", she thought. Do you think she made some bread? Let's see...she would need some flour and salt, and water. Then she got her spoon. (Pretend to stir). Whisk, whisk, whisk, she stirred it up real quick. Can you all show me how you stir? (Encourage children to stir with you). Faster, faster! Martha is in a hurry. (Stir faster with the children). Do you think maybe she made some hamburgers, too? Pat, pat, pat. (Lay one hand on top of the other and pat them together). Can you all show me how you make hamburgers? (Pat hands together again). Faster, faster, we have so much to do! (Pat faster). Pat, pat, pat. (3) Martha was working so hard that she started to get upset. "Why isn't Mary helping me?", she thought, "She should be helping me!" But Martha didn't slow down. She kept working. Maybe she made a pie for dessert. Let's help Martha roll out the dough. (Pretend to roll dough). Hurry, hurry. Martha has so much to do! (Roll faster). Phe-e-w! By now, Martha was all stressed out! She was worried about all the things she had to do! (Wipe forehead). And, now Martha started getting all red in the face. She was mad that she was the only one working! (Put hands on hips). Finally, she was so upset that she stomped into the other room to find Jesus. (Speak in a whiny voice) "Jesus!", Martha whined, "Don't you care? Mary is letting me do all the work by myself! Its not fair!" But Jesus had a gentle answer for Martha. "Martha, Martha," Jesus answered. "You are upset and worried about many things. But, you don't need to fuss so much. Only one thing is needed. Mary is doing the most important thing. I won't let her be bothered."

I wonder what Mary was doing? It must be important if Jesus said so. (4) Do you see Mary? She is smiling. She is sitting on the floor right up close to Jesus! She was being friendly and talking with Jesus. And she was sitting quietly listening close to everything Jesus said. It was her way of showing love to Jesus. Jesus was so glad that Mary was spending time with him. He wasn't thinking about food. (Shake head no). He was just having fun sitting and talking with his friends. So Martha was doing all that fussing and worrying for nothing! Well, it was very nice for Martha to cook for her friends. But, she forgot the most important thing! She forgot to spend time with Jesus! Now let's have snack, and then we can talk about the story.

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

Did you like the story? Let's talk about Martha. (2 again) Martha was doing something very good when she cooked some yummy food for her friends. But, then Martha started fussing over every little thing. She was trying to make everything perfect, and trying to do way too much! Martha was so busy she forgot the most important thing: She forgot to spend time with Jesus! And she forgot to do her work with love. That's why she got mad and started whining.

(4 again) But, Jesus said that Mary picked the best thing: Sitting and listening to him! Sometimes we get so busy that we forget the most important thing too. Sometimes it seems like there is so much to do. Sometimes we want to do everything! And, we want everything to be perfect. So we get stressed out! Look at the children in these pictures. Look how busy they are building with blocks. Busy, busy, busy! (Gasp). But... uh-oh. They forgot the most important thing: They forgot to spend time with Jesus. (5) Lots of times you are running off to preschool, or going over to play at a friend's house, or helping mom or dad. These are all good things to do! But before we do all those things, who can tell me the best thing to do? (Let children answer). Right! -- Spending time with Jesus!

Can anybody tell me how they could spend time with Jesus? (Let children answer). (6) Yes, they could pray. We can pray any time at all! And we can pray anywhere we are. We can pray at home in the morning. We can pray at school in the afternoon. We can pray at our friend's house. We can even remember to pray when we go on vacation! (7) The children could also listen to Bible stories, or ask their dad to have family devotions. They could also spend time thinking about what they learned at church. Jesus doesn't want us to be so busy that we forget about him. (Shake head no). He doesn't want us to stress out and worry. He wants us to s-l-o-w down and spend time with him. He wants us to think about him and the things that we learn from him. Jesus loves for his children to spend time with him! Now we have some fun activities to help us learn more about spending time with Jesus.

PRAYER: Allow children to pray after an adult or teen helper prays.
