LESSON: Four Helpful Friends!

Intro: One day, Jesus was teaching the people at a house. The people loved to hear Jesus teach! (1) Many people came to the house to hear Jesus teach. More and more people kept coming to the house Now the house was so full that no more people could go inside the house!

(2) Soon four men came to the house where Jesus was. They were carrying their friend on a mat. Their friend lying on the mat couldn't walk because his legs were hurt. They four men wanted to help him. They believed that Jesus could make their friend all better. They knew Jesus could heal him! (1 again) But, with so many people crowding around Jesus, how could they ever get their friend to Jesus? Nobody knew. But, they didn't give up. There must be a way to get their friend to Jesus!

(3) Then somebody had an idea! Since they couldn't go in the door of the house, so maybe they could go in through the roof! (Point to roof). So, they climbed up to the top of the house, carrying their friend. Up, up, up they went. Can everybody show me how you climb? (Show children how to use hands to pretend to climb). All the way to the top of the house they carried their friend. But, how would they get their friend to Jesus? Look! Here are some loose tiles. They took away the tiles (Lift up tiles). and made a hole in the roof. Then, they let their friend down to Jesus! (Lower man figure through hole on roof). Down, down, down he went. When Jesus saw the man with the hurt legs, he said to him, "Your sins are forgiven!"

But, some people in the crowd didn't believe that Jesus could forgive, (Shake head no). So, Jesus said to the man with the hurt legs, "Get up, take your mat, and go home!" (4) So, the man jumped to his feet, picked up his mat and went home! Jesus had healed the man! Now he could walk, and run, and jump! And, he walked all the way home, praising God the whole way! And the people said, "We have seen Jesus do awesome things today!" Everybody gave praise to God! How glad the four men were that they helped their friend! They knew Jesus could heal their friend...they just knew it. Now everybody knew that Jesus could heal! And, now they knew that Jesus could forgive too! What a happy day it was! Did you like this story? Let's have snack, and then we can talk about the story.

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

We learned some great things in our Bible story today, didn't we? They can't get to Jesus all by themselves. Sometimes people need help. (2 again) In our story, the four men helped their friend when they saw that he needed help. Who can tell me how they helped their friend? (Give children a chance to answer). Yes! They brought their friend to Jesus. They believed that Jesus could heal him, so they carried him to the house where Jesus was. And, when it was hard to get to Jesus, they didn't give up. They thought of a way to get their friend to Jesus! They took him up to the roof and lowered him right down to Jesus!

(5) We have another Bible bee this week to help us with our lesson today. This is Bloopy the Bible Bee. She has two things to tell us: Bee... (Lift flap of flower) helpful. That means we can do things to help others. (6) One way we can be helpful is to pray for others. (Place hands together in prayer). Can anybody think of another way we could be helpful? (Give children a chance to answer, then continue.). If we saw someone hurt, we could tell a teacher or mom or dad. If someone is hungry, we could give them food. If someone needs clothes, we could give them clothes. If someone is sick, we could send them a card to help cheer them up. God is pleased when we help others.

(5 again) What else do you want to tell us, Bloopy? Bee... (Lift second flap) -lieve -- that Jesus can do great things! And we learned in our story that Jesus can do awesome things! He can forgive us, and he can heal us too! Thank you for sharing with us, Bloopy. (Place bee on bulletin board with other bee).

PRAYER: Allow children to pray after you or a helper prays.
