Intro: (1) It was a a very special time of year! It was time for the festival when all the people went to Jerusalem. They were going there to praise God for the great love he had shown to his people! Jesus and his helpers were on their way to the festival too! In Bible Times they didn't have cars or trucks to drive. They had to walk or ride on animals. When they came to a big hill, Jesus asked two of his helpers to go up ahead a little ways. He told them they would find a little baby donkey tied up. He told them to untie the little donkey and bring it to him. So Jesus' helpers went to look for the little donkey. (Hold hand above brow, and look around). Let's pretend we are with Jesus' helpers. We can help them find the little donkey. We can all look for him together. He is hidden somewhere in the room. (2) (Let the kids look for the donkey. When somebody finds him, continue. If they have a hard time finding it quickly, give them hints).

There he is! Jesus' helpers found him all tied up, just like Jesus said they would. Then Jesus' helpers untied the donkey (Untie donkey). And, they brought the little donkey to Jesus. This would be the very first time that the little donkey gave someone a ride on his back! I think the donkey was probably a little afraid, since he was so young. But he let Jesus ride on him anyway. He trusted Jesus. But there's just one problem. The little donkey doesn't have a saddle. How could Jesus ride on him if he doesn't have a saddle? How about this? (Hold up coat). Here is a coat! Jesus' helpers laid the coat on his back instead. (Fold paper coat over donkey's back). There! Now Jesus would have a nice, soft seat to sit on. The little donkey didn't have to be perfect. (Shake head no). He didn't have to have a lot of special things. He could just be himself. He could help Jesus just the way he was.

(3) Then Jesus hopped on the donkey. The little donkey gladly let Jesus ride him! He didn't kick and jump. He didn't put up a fuss. He just let Jesus lead him. He would follow whatever Jesus said. So off they went, down the hill, into the city of Jerusalem! Clip-Clop, clip-clop, clip-clop. The sound of the little donkey's feet could be heard from far away. (Cup ear). What a special day it was! (4) When the people saw Jesus, they were so excited to see him! No one was really paying attention to the little donkey. But that was o.k. He didn't try to get attention. He was just glad to be able to help Jesus. Everybody could see how the people loved Jesus! The people knew about the times when Jesus made sick people all better. They knew that Jesus made the blind people see too! They knew Jesus could do lots of things that nobody else could do! (5) The people loved Jesus so much! They wanted to show him how much they loved him: So, they waved palm branches in the air, and shouted praises to Jesus! (6) Even little children were praising Jesus! (Have your assistant give each child a palm branch (7). Let's all wave our branches in the air too. (Wave branches in the air as you continue). As Jesus rode by they shouted "Hosanna! Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"

(8) Then the people took palm branches and their coats, and laid them down on the ground in front of Jesus. They were making a special path for Jesus and the little donkey to ride on! They took off their coats and laid them down on the path too. We can pretend we are making a special special path too. Let's lay our branches on the table and make a path! (Show children how to lay their branches on the table. Have your assistant also give them the paper coats (9) to lay down also. Then arrange them to form a path). Wow! What a great path you made! Thank you all for helping me! Clip-clop, clip-clop, clip-clop. The little donkey took Jesus as far as he wanted to go. I'm so glad the little donkey trusted Jesus on him on that special day! I hope all of you trust Jesus too. Did you like that story? Let's have a snack now; and then we can talk about the story.

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

The little donkey in our story was very young. He never had anyone ride on him before. (Shake head no). He was probably a little afraid. But he trusted Jesus anyway. Did you know that you don't have to be all grown up to trust Jesus? You can trust Jesus even when you are young too. The little donkey didn't fuss or kick or jump. He just let Jesus lead him. He followed whatever Jesus said. (10) We can learn what Jesus said when we hear Bible stories. He teaches us how to love God and how to love people. When we listen to Jesus' words and follow them, we are showing that we love God. And, you can follow Jesus just the way you are. The little donkey didn't have a special saddle. (Shake head no). You don't have to have the best clothes. You don't have to have lots of toys. You don't even have to be all grown up. Jesus loves you just the way you are too! And, Jesus loves for his precious children to follow him - Palm Sunday and every day!

PRAYER: Allow children to pray after you or a helper prays.
