Sunday School Fun Zone - Year 2 Toddler Lesson about Bible Story: The Great Catch

Week 5 - If Jesus Says So!

Concepts Children Learn: If Jesus Says so, that's what I will do. Jesus helps me do great things when I follow him!

Supplies Needed: 2 Laundry bags made of netting, or other bag made of netting. Rectangular sponges, cut into a fish-shape, or fish-shaped sponges (Enough to fill at least part of the bag). Fill one with the "fish" before class, and hide in a large garbage bag. Tie and place under table before you tell the story. Untie before you start lesson. Prep: Mark you bible with the memory verse: Matthew 4:19. Print the b&w or color story pages. 1bw, 1color, 2bw, 2color, 3bw, 3color, 4bw , 4color.

The numbers in parentheses tell you what Story Page to hold up while you are telling the story. (You don't need to read the words on the actual story pages. They are for use as posters or coloring pages). Only read words that are not in parentheses for the lesson. The words in parentheses tell you what actions you do.

Bible Memory Verse: Matthew 4:19. Other Scriptures used as reference: Luke 5:1-11.

Have you ever played Follow-the-leader? Its a lot of fun. You just do everything that the leader does. And, you walk wherever the leader walks! We can play that game a little later. Today our story is about someone said, "Follow Me!". I will tell you the story now.

(1) This is Peter and his friend. They were fishermen. Their job was to catch fish. They used a big net to catch all the fish! Even bigger than this one! (Show them your net). Sometimes they caught lots of fish. Sometimes they only caught a few fish. One day Peter and his friend went fishing. They got into their boat. (Make a jumping motion by arching your hand up and down). They paddled out to a good spot on the lake. Can you show me how you paddle? (Make paddling motions with children.) Then they let down their nets (Throw empty net over to the side, down behind the table and hold it out.). They waited....and waited.....and waited... (Bring up the empty net). But, no fish! (Shake head no). (2) Now they were sad. All that work, and still no fish! Well, by then it was time to go back, so Peter and his friend paddled their boat back to the shore. (Make paddling motions with children.)

When they got back, there was Jesus! He was teaching the people. There were lots of people who wanted to listen to Jesus. When Jesus was done teaching, he talked with Peter. He told Peter to go fishing again! He told Peter to go over there this time. (Point in the opposite direction that you put your net). Peter said, "We have been fishing all night, and we didn't catch any fish at all! But...if you say so, I will go again". Peter didn't know why Jesus would ask him to go fishing again. (Shake head no). But, Peter loved Jesus, so he did what Jesus told him to do.

So one more time, Peter and his friend got into their boat, (make a jumping motion by arching your hand up and down), and paddled out to the deep water. (Make paddling motions with children.) And, one more time, they let down their net exactly where Jesus told them to. (Throw net over the side of table, other side, then bring up the net that you have under the table that is full of fish). Wow! Look at all these fish! There were so many fish, the net began to break! They needed help to bring in all these fish! Peter had to call out to his friends to come and help them. Can you help me lift all these fish up on the table? (Have children help you put the net of fish up onto the table). Oh, thank you for helping me! You are all such good helpers! (3) There were so many fish that they filled up two boats, and the boats began to sink! Everybody was so excited! They had never seen so many fish before! It was a miracle! Jesus can do things we can't do! Only Jesus could bring in so many fish! (4) But then Peter felt scared. He said to Jesus, "Lord, I do so many bad things. Go away from me!". I think Peter felt like he didn't deserve for Jesus to be so kind to him. Why should Jesus help him? Jesus was so kind, and so great! Peter just felt like he was so sinful, and so weak. But Jesus told Peter, "Don't be afraid. From now on, you will catch people instead of fish! Jesus told them,"Come, follow me". Jesus would help Peter do great things, and Jesus would help Peter do kind things too! Jesus helped Peter just because he loved him. Peter didn't have to be good to follow Jesus. And, he didn't have to be great. He could follow Jesus just like he was. So, Peter and his friend left their boat sitting on the shore, and they followed Jesus everywhere he went.

Did you like that story? Now we can have a snack. Then we can talk about the story.

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

In the story Peter didn't know why Jesus wanted him to go fishing again! He was upset because the last time they went fishing, they didn't catch any fish! Peter didn't really want to try again. But, Peter loved Jesus, so he did it just because Jesus said so. Then Peter saw the miracle Jesus did when he brought him so many fish! (Hold up net full of fish). But, then Peter got scared. He saw how great and how good Jesus was! But Peter knew that he, himself, was not good. (Point to yourself, and shake head no). But Jesus told Peter that he didn't have to be afraid. Jesus promised to help Peter do great things - not just catch silly old fish. Jesus would help Peter bring people to God! And Jesus would help Peter even if he wasn't perfect. Sometimes people think that its too hard to follow Jesus. They feel like they have to be good all the time. But people mess up. Jesus says, we don't have to be afraid. He is the one who is strong. All we have to do is trust Jesus! When we let Jesus help us, He will be the strong one. Jesus will help us do all the great things that he wants us to do! He just wants us to follow him. He will do the rest. One way we learn to follow Jesus is by doing what God tells us in our Bibles. Do you remember what Peter said when Jesus told him to go fishing again? Peter said, "If you say so!..." That's what Jesus wants to us to say to him too, "If you say so... I will do it".
