LESSON:

Intro: (1) Have you ever been sick? Its no fun being sick, is it? You can't play with your friends when you're sick. You have to stay in bed until you get better. Sometimes you have aches and pains. Maybe you even have a fever. You just want to hurry up and get better. Today, we have a story about some men who were sick for a long time. Let's listen and see what happens.

(Two pages of 2) Near the town of Samaria, there were some men walking along. See the spots on their skin? (Point to the spots). That's because they were all sick. They had a skin disease called leprosy. Let's all count the men together to see how many there are. (Point to the men as you count together). 1, 2, 3,....10! If anybody touched these men, they could get the disease too. So, everybody stayed far away from them. See how sad and alone they look? They couldn't go play with their friends. (Shake your head no). They couldn't live with their families either. (Shake your head no again). If only they could get better, they would be so happy.

As they were walking along, one of them saw Jesus far away! (Show a bright, happy face). They had heard all about Jesus. They knew that Jesus could do things that we can't do. Hey! Maybe Jesus could make them all better! He was their only hope! So, from far away, they called out to Jesus, "Please have mercy on us!" They were asking Jesus to be kind to them. They wanted Jesus to make them all better. And, Jesus was kind to them! Jesus told them to go to the priest, and show the priest that they were all better. Then the priest would let them live with their families again.

So, the 10 men did what Jesus told them to do. Off they went to the priest. They trusted in Jesus to heal them. And, do you know what happened on their way to the priest? (3) All their spots went away! (Smile and act surprised). Jesus had healed them! They were so happy! All they had to do was show the priest that they were all better, then they could go be with their friends and family again! They were so happy and excited that they hurried off to the priest. Uh-oh! I think they forgot something. (Place your hand on your mouth). Uh-oh. They forgot to thank Jesus.

(4) But one man remembered Jesus. One of the men was so happy that Jesus healed him. He knew that he didn't deserve to have Jesus be so kind to him. (Shake head no). He had a thankful heart. So, he ran back to thank Jesus! (5) When he got to Jesus, he got down on his knees and said, "Thank you, Jesus! Thank you for making me all better!"

Jesus was glad that he came back to thank him, but he asked, "Where are the other nine men? Didn't I heal all 10 men?" Then Jesus said to him, You may get up and go. Your faith has made you all better". Let's have snack, then we'll talk about the story.

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

Who can tell me how many men were sick? (Give children a chance to answer). That's right - 10. Who can tell me how many went back to say, "Thank you", to Jesus? (Give children a chance to answer). One. Very good. That man was different than the others. He was humble. He knew that he didn't do anything to deserve to have Jesus be so kind to him. Jesus didn't have to heal him. But, he did anyway. So the man had a thankful heart. The other men were healed too, but they were not humble enough to thank Jesus. They just felt better, and then ran off to be with their friends and family.

Lots of times, God gives us many special things. And, we don't even thank him. Just like in this story, (1 again) there are lots of times when we are sick, and he heals us! (6) He makes us all better! Let's all look out the window. (Point to window). God gives us the warm sunshine and fresh rain to make things grow. Do we remember to thank God for all those things? Let's all bend down and touch our feet. (Bend down and touch feet). He gives us feet to walk, doesn't he? Show me your hands. (Hold up hands). He gives us hands to do kind things. Show me where your eyes are. (Touch your eyes). He gives us eyes to see. He gives us the ability to run and jump and play! God is just kind to us! Let's all remember to thank him for the kind things he does for us! God is the one who we can praise! I know I want to be like the man with the thankful heart. I hope you do too. Now we have a prayer to say.

PRAYER: Allow children to take turns praying after you or an assistant prays.
