Intro: Have you ever seen a storm? Rain pounds down on the roof, and the loud thunder booms across the sky. BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! The lightening flashes and lights everything up! The wind blows so hard that the trees look like they're going to fall over! Its scary and you just want it to go away! Wouldn't it be great if you could just say "STOP!" and the storm would stop? In our story today, there is also a storm outside. Jesus' friends get scared too. Let's listen close to see what happens.

(1) One day Jesus and his friends were on a boat. They were going to the other side of the lake. Jesus was tired, so he laid down to take a nap. Everything was calm and peaceful. What a great day for a boat ride!

(2) (Speak in loud voice). But, soon the dark clouds came, and the wind started blowing stronger! Can you show me what wind sounds like? Whooo-whoooh! The waves got higher and higher! Swish! Swish! Who can show me what waves look like? (Make motions of waves with your hands). The boat was being tossed back and forth. Let's all make boats. (Hold elbows with opposite hand and rock arms back and forth). Now the waves were so high that water was getting inside the boat! Oh, no! if the boat sinks, they will all drown! By now, Jesus' friends were really scared!

"Wake up, Jesus, wake up"! they cried. Let's all say it together: Wake up, Jesus, wake up! Help us, we're about to drown! Now Jesus was awake, and he could help them, but what could he do? How could he help his friends feel better? Jesus knew just what to do. He told the wind, STOP! (Hold up hand with palm flat). Let's all make the sign to stop. And he told the waves, STOP! (Hold up hand with palm flat). Sh-h-h-h! (Speak in soft voice). (3) Now everything was peaceful and quiet! Sh-h-h-h. (Cup ear). Listen. I don't hear anymore thunder. I don't hear any more lightening. I don't hear anything at all! The rainy clouds all went away. The wind stopped blowing. And, there were no more waves! Jesus' friends were so surprised! How could Jesus stop the the storm? But Jesus did! Then Jesus asked his friends, Why were you afraid?" Jesus' friends didn't know that Jesus could stop a storm! Maybe next time, they could be brave. Next time they would trust Jesus. Now his friends knew that Jesus can do things that no one else can do! Let's talk about the story, then we will have snack.

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

Did you like the story? Sometimes scary things happen to us. And, we don't know what to do. We wish all the scary things would stop. But, we can't make them stop. So, what should we do when we're scared? Do you remember what Jesus' friends did when they were scared? That's right. They called out to him, "Please help us, Jesus!" (4, 5) And that is all we have to do too! Jesus loves to help his children! He loves us so much. He will always help us. He doesn't always make the storms stop. (6) Sometimes we have to go through the storms. But he is just with us the whole time. Sometimes he just calms us instead calming the storm. Here's a easy verse we can remember: (Read Psalm 56:3). We can always trust in him to help us! Jesus can do things that we can't do! So, the next time something scary happens, what will you do? (4, 5 again) Call on Jesus, and ask him to help you! Now we have a prayer to say and some fun activities and crafts to make later.

PRAYER: Allow children to pray after you or an assistant prays.
