LESSON: Thankful For Surprises!

Intro: (Do Warm-Up activity before lesson). Did you all have fun with the surprises you found? I like surprises too! Did you know that God has lots of surprises waiting for us? Let's all listen close and we will find out more about what surprises he has for us.

Did you ever want to go to a perfect place with perfect people? A place where there are no fights, no yelling, no tears. (1) A place where everyone shares and everyone is happy all the time. Nobody ever does bad things: There are no bullies, no show-offs. Nobody brags, nobody is selfish, and nobody pushes. (2) Everybody belongs. Everybody is best friends, and everybody loves you all the time. A place where everyone is kind. There are lots of hugs and love. A place where nobody ever gets sick. Dogs don't growl and snakes don't hiss. (3) Tigers don't bite and skunks aren't smelly. A place where you never get scared because its always safe! A place where we can hang out with Jesus! And, see God too! -- right up close! And what if this place never ended, but went on forever and ever and ever! Wouldn't that be great! Well, did you know that there really is a place like that! Let's listen to what Jesus told his friends before he went back to heaven.

(Read John 14:1-3) Jesus was also saying that to everyone who trusts in him. For each one who loves Jesus, he will prepare a special room just for them. And, some day soon he will come back to get us! And he will take us back to heaven with him so we can be with him forever! (4) If you are sad now, Jesus will wipe away your tears. (5) Then you will never cry again! We will just be happy all of the time! Won't that be wonderful? (6) Think of all the things you love now - Teddy bears, cotton candy, strawberries, dolls to dress up, baby animals to pet at the zoo, and roller coasters! All those things are great. But heaven will be even better than that! Heaven will be better than going to Disneyland! It will be better than anything you can imagine! And it will go on forever! It will be our forever home for all those who trust in Jesus!

In heaven we won't even need sunshine because God will shine so brightly! And we will shine with God's love too! (2 again) People of all colors will be there together. We will one, great-big, fun-loving, happy family! (7) We will spend lots of time praising God together because we will be so thankful for all God has done for us, and because we love him so much! We will be able to talk and play with Jesus as much as we want! God will give us special, fun jobs we will love doing together! There won't be any fighting. We will all be friendly and loving with each other! (3 again) Animals that we think are mean now, will be tame and friendly! Can you imagine playing with tigers and or having a bear cub for a pet? But, of course we wouldn't want to try that now! (Shake head no).

(8) Our forever home will be bright and beautiful! The city we live in will have streets made of gold! And, the buildings will be made of beautiful green emeralds, pink amethyst, blue topaz and lots of other precious stones! Our forever home will sparkle with millions of precious jewels! We sure didn't do anything to deserve such a beautiful place! (Shake head no). But, Jesus loves us so much that he just wants to give everyone who loves him this beautiful, perfect home! Then we can be there with him forever!

This is only a little bit of what heaven will be like! God is planning so many surprises for us that we can't even imagine! I know I can't wait to get to heaven! I wonder who will be in heaven? Let's have snack and then we will talk some more about that.

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

Let's talk about who will be in heaven! We know that God lives there, and Jesus! The Holy Spirit lives there too; and, the angels. Did you know that God promises that all those who are in his family can one day live with him too! People who speak other languages will be there. (9, 10) And, the bible characters that we read stories about will be there too! Who wants to lift up these leaves to see who will be in heaven? (Point to tree flap and let child lift it). Do you know who that is? That's Zacchaeus! He will be in heaven. I wonder who this is behind this rock? Who wants to take a turn? (Let child lift rock flap). Do you know who that is with the lions? Yes! That's Daniel! Daniel will be in heaven too! We can be in heaven one day too if we are part of God's family! (If you are teaching 2-year-olds you may want to stop here. Ask God to give you wisdom. If you think some children may understand the following salvation message, feel free to continue).

How can we be part of God's family and know that we will go to heaven some day? God is holy. That means he is perfect. He is good all the time! But, we are not. (Point to yourself). We do bad things. Every one of us does bad things sometimes. (Point to each one in the group). But to live in heaven with God (point up), God says we have be holy, with no sin. (11) That's why God sent Jesus to die on the cross. When Jesus died on the cross, he was taking the punishment for our sins. Even though he never sinned, he suffered and died so that we could be forgiven. So, if we ask God to forgive us, he will. We don't have to be punished now because Jesus died on the cross to take away our sin! We didn't do anything to deserve that kindness. Jesus just loves us so much that he died for us, so we could be holy and live with him in heaven some day! Everyone who wants to join God's family can come to the back of the room to say a special prayer. (Have assistant or yourself lead children in prayer while others start the craft).

PRAYER: Allow children to pray after adult prays.
