LESSON: Jesus Teaches Us What To Say When We Pray- Part 2! (With Group Activity Combined)

Intro: (1) This is Ryan. He is having a good time with his father. It makes him so happy to get lots of attention from his father. He always has the most fun when its just the two of them playing together. (2) But, look who is here now! This is Reggie, Ryan's little brother. Reggie wanted to have fun with his father too. Reggie says, "Up!" He wanted his dad to pick him up too! But Ryan wanted his father's attention all to himself. He didn't want Reggie there, so he pushed Reggie away. Their father didn't like that at all. He told Ryan not to push Reggie away. After all, he had enough love for all of his children! (3) He could hold both of his children at the same time.

Have you ever wanted your father's attention all to yourself? Sometimes we feel like we will get less love and attention if our brothers and sisters are also there. I wonder is that is how we feel with God sometimes? Our Bible tells us that God is our Father in heaven. (3 again) And, he loves all of his children, just like Ryan's father loved all of his children. And God always has enough love for everybody. Nobody gets left out. (Shake head no). Sometimes we forget that God loves his other children just as much as he loves us. One way he shows that he loves us is when he forgives us. And, since God loves us and forgives us. He wants us to share his love with others by forgiving them also.

Jesus taught us about forgiveness. Here is what Jesus taught us to say when we pray. (Read Matthew 6:12). When we do something wrong, we feel bad and we run and hide. But, Jesus says we don't have to do that. He says we can go to God and say we're sorry. Let's make a big puzzle together to learn about forgiveness! Here is the first puzzle piece. (Lay puzzle piece on table, facing children). (4) When we are really sorry, and ask God to forgive us, he does! Every time! No matter what we did wrong! We will use these hearts to show how much God loves us and forgives us! Who wants to add this piece to the puzzle? (Let child attach puzzle piece). (5) When he forgives us, that means he doesn't stay mad at us. (Shake head no). He forgets all about it! And, he still lets us be his little child. Then we are so-o thankful because we don't have to run and hide anymore. We can be close to God again! Who wants to add this puzzle piece? (Let child attach puzzle piece). (6) Since God forgives us, he wants us to forgive others when they do something bad to us. God loves all of his children just as much as he loves you! And, we can help others feel God's love when we forgive them. Who hasn't put a piece on the puzzle yet? (Let child attach puzzle piece). (7) When we really forgive others we don't stay mad at them. (Shake head no). We can tell them, "I forgive you" when they hurt us, because we know that we do bad things sometimes too. And, we do what we can to show them we still care. This little girl is hugging her friend and telling her, "Its o.k. I forgive you." Who wants to add this puzzle piece? (Let child attach puzzle piece). (8) Forgiveness isn't easy. When someone hurts us, we feel like we want to hurt them back. We can't forgive others on our own. (Shake head no). Its too hard! (9) But, God will help us forgive when we ask him to. Who wants to put the last piece on the puzzle? (Let child attach puzzle piece). Look at our puzzle now! That looks great! Thank you all for helping me! Let's have snack, then we will learn one more thing Jesus taught us.

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

There is one more thing Jesus taught us to say when we pray. Here is what he said: (Read Matthew 6:13). Jesus was teaching us to ask God to help us to not sin. That's because we are not strong. There are times when we feel like doing bad things - things that hurt God. But we can trust God to help us. (10) Let's look at these two pictures. Their mother told her two children not eat cookies before dinner. She told them they could have the cookies after dinner. We know that its right to do what our moms and dads tell us to do. But those cookies sure do look good! And, the children are feeling a little hungry. They really want those cookies! So, they have a choice. They can sneak in the kitchen when their mom isn't looking, and get some cookies. (Point to picture of children eating cookies). Or they can do what their mom told them, and wait until after dinner. (Point to picture of children waiting). Which one would you pick? (Let children point to the picture they would choose). Which one does God want us to pick? (Let children choose again). Remember what Jesus taught us. Jesus taught us that we can stop and pray! When we feel like we might do something we know is wrong, God will help us! We can ask God to help us pick the right thing. And, God will help us every time! Isn't that wonderful! God is so good to us! Now let's pray the way Jesus taught us!
