LESSON: Thankful For Everything! (Pretend Play activities combined with lesson)

Intro: Today we're going to talk about things that change. Did you all have fun making shadows? Its lots of fun to see how the shadows change all the time. (1) Did you ever notice the shadow of someone walking? In the morning their shadow might be behind them if the sun is in front of him. (Point to shadow). Then at noon, the shadow changes. The sun is straight up over his head, and the shadow is close to the boy. But, in the afternoon, it might be in front of him since the sun moved and went behind them! We never know where shadows are going to be. They change all the time! Let's see what our Bible says about this. (Read James 1:17). Our Bible says God doesn't change like the shifting shadows! (Shake head no). God is always the same! He is always good! Everything good comes from him!

Let's talk about what kinds of good things come from God. (2) Does your your mom hug you sometimes? The love she shows you is from God! (3) Do you feel the sunshine on your face in the afternoon? The warm sunshine is from God too! (4) Do you sometimes hear the rain falling softly outside on a rainy day? Let's make motions to show how the rain falls. (Lead children to wiggle fingers, bringing hands down to imitate rain). Pitter-patter, pitter-patter. The fresh rain that makes everything sparkly- clean is from God too! (5) Did you ever get a puppy for your birthday? The puppy is from...guess who? (Let children answer). God! Very good! Let's all pretend to be puppies. (Show children how to use their hands to make ears, and make barking sounds). (6) Every week we share a yummy snack in our class. Who should we thank for our snack? (let children answer). God! Right again! Everything good is from God! He gives us so many wonderful things to enjoy!

But, there are some things that we think are not so good. (Shake head no). (4 again) One minute we're enjoying the bright sunshine. (7) And, suddenly a storm comes in, and you're not ready! Soon, you're a soggy, cold mess! Let's pretend we got caught in the rain, and we have to run home before it starts raining harder! (Show children how to pat their laps real fast to make sound of feet running). (8) Or, maybe your new puppy that you have lots of fun playing with it...runs away and gets lost! Sometimes we don't like it when things change. We just want things to be the way they were before.

Let's see what our Bible says about all these changes: (Read 1 Thes. 5:18). Even when things happen that we don't like, we always have something to be thankful for. (5 again) We can thank God for the rain even though we don't like it, because we need it in order for things to grow. (8) When our puppy is lost, we can be thankful that we had him to play with for a little while. And, we can be thankful that we can have another puppy some day. Even in the hard times, we can trust in God's goodness. We can depend on him. God never changes (shake head no) even though everything around us changes. He always gives us good things to thank him for, even when things happen that we don't like it.

Let's have snack, and then we can talk some more after snack

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

Did you know that God brings good things even from the things we don't like? (Read Romans 8:28). (Show children potted flowers or bouquet). (9) See these beautiful flowers? We wouldn't have them if it never rained! God brought something beautiful from something we didn't like. (10) And, look what is here! God brought the lost puppy back home! Now the boy is so happy. Things don't always turn out how we would like them to. But, when we are having a hard time dealing with something we don't like, if we just wait...(wait a few seconds) and wait...(wait a few seconds) and trust that God is good. Then one day, we will see God bring something good from the very thing we didn't like!

Now let's say a prayer and thank God for everything, and then we have some fun crafts and activities to do.

PRAYER: Allow children to pray after adult prays.
