LESSON: I Praise God For Special People, and Pray For Them!

Intro: (1) God has given each of us special people in our lives -- people we like to spend time with: (2) People who are kind and listen to our stories, like grandma and grandpa. (3) Friends who are fun to play with. (4) Or maybe we have brothers or sisters who teach us how to do things. (5) Maybe we have a special times with mom or dad. Maybe we have a teacher we like a lot. Maybe we have a neighbor who lives close by who we like to go visit. We share lots of good times with these special people!

(6) But, sometimes we have to go far away, and then we miss them. (7) Our Bibles tell us about a preacher named Paul. Paul had a young helper named Timothy. One time Paul had to go away to do God's work. He was glad to go, but when he was away he missed Timothy, so he wrote Timothy a letter. Let's read what Paul said to him in his letter: (Give Letter 1 to a child to open. As you read Read 2 Timothy 1:3). Paul had been praying for Timothy. Then he told Timothy in his letter that he thanked God for him every time he prayed! Paul was so thankful to God for giving him a great helper like Timothy. And, he wanted Timothy to know how happy it made him to have him for a friend!

Another time, Paul and Timothy went away together to teach about God. Paul wrote another letter, but this time it was to the people at his church. Let's open this letter and read what it says. (Give letter 2 to a child to open. Read Philippians 1:3-5a). Paul was so thankful for all of his friends at church that he had to write and tell them! He told them that when he prayed, he thanked God for all his friends at church who helped him while he was preaching! He wanted to let them know that he believed God was helping them do these good things. And, he knew God would keep helping them do more good things! And, it made him feel really special that they were praying for him, so he told them how thankful he was that they were praying for him.

When we see someone a lot, we get used to them. And, sometimes we start to feel like they are not so special. (8) They might start to bother us. Then maybe we are not thankful for them any more. But, when the people who are special to us have to go away, we miss them, just like Paul missed Timothy and the people of his church when he went away. (9) Then we are sad because we wish we could spend time with them, and talk and laugh with them. (10) But, then we see them again, we are so glad they are back! And, we might tell them, "Its so good to see you. I missed you so much!"

(11) But, we don't have to wait until people go away to tell them we are thankful for them. We can tell them any time that we are thankful for them. We can tell them when we see them, or we can make a card for them. We can even write a letter to them. (12) And, we want to remember to thank God for them every day. He is the one who gives us all of these special people! Now, let's have snack, and then we will talk some more.

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

We all have people who are special to us. Who can tell me about a special person that you know?(Give each child a chance to share if they'd like to. Then you and your assistant can share also). Its pretty easy to remember the people who are close to us. But, sometimes there are special people who do kind things for us, and we might not even notice -- Like, the mailman who brings your mail every day. And, what about the pastor at our church, pastor (Pastor's name) who teaches all the people? He works so hard to teach us about God, and sometimes we forget about him. And, did you know that he prays for us? He prays for all of the families at our church. What about the person at the store who packs your groceries? And what about the man who comes by in a big truck and takes away all your trash bags? Do we remember to thank these people for helping us? We can mention them in our prayers too.

Proverbs 27:10 tells us (Read Proverbs 27:10). Sometimes we get busy and forget the special people we know. We forget to show them that we care. We forget to say thank you when they help us. We forget to thank them when they pray for us. And, sometimes we might even forget to pray for them. But, God is the one who gave us these special people. So, let's remember to thank God for all the special people we know. And let's remember to pray for them. And, after we say 'thank you' to God, we can let each special person we know how glad we are to know them! Later we will make some cards to say 'thank you' to the special people we know. But first let's say a prayer and thank God for those people.

PRAYER: Allow children to pray after adult prays.
