LESSON: God is So Strong!

Intro: (Do warm-up activity before lesson, or use picture 1 instead). (1) We like to see strong people, don't we? We are amazed when we see how strong they are! We like to see them do things we can't do! But do you know what God likes? Let's listen to this verse to find out (Read Ps. 147:10-11). God doesn't care that we have big, strong arms. (Point to arms in picture). Instead, God wants us to admit that we are weak, and that we need him. (2) He likes it when we know that we need him. He likes us to depend on him for strength.

(1 again) Even the strongest men (or name of volunteer for warm-up activity) need God's power. All of us are weak compared to God. God is stronger than everyone! He rules over everything! (Read Jer. 32:17). Nothing is too hard for God! He can do anything! But we are weak. We need God's help to do lots of things. Sometimes its hard to forgive someone when they have hurt us. We need God's power to do that. (3) Its hard to love sometimes when people aren't acting so loveable. We need to ask for God's help to love others as he loves us. And, sometimes its hard to do things that we're afraid to do. We need God's strength and help to do scary things that we don't know how to do.

This verse tells us more: (4) (Read Isaiah 40:29-31). Even the strongest, healhiest young men get tired sometimes. And, even on our best days, we sin sometimes. But when we trust in the Lord and ask him to help us be strong, he does! His power and love gives us the strength to keep going when its hard. When we stay close to God, he helps us love and forgive. (5) He helps us share and be kind, even when its hard. (6, 6b) When we hope in the Lord, he helps us be like the eagles! They can fly miles and miles with their big strong wings! They go high above all the troubles down below! They just rests in God's love and power! But we can't be like that on our own. (Shake head no). We need God's help. And, he gladly gives it to us when we ask him. God is so kind! He loves to share his power with us! God has lots of great power to share with us! Did you know that God promises to give us everything we need to do good? (7) God is not stingy. (Shake head no). He gives us everything we need to obey him and be like him. Then we can have his power and joy and peace. And, the more we get to know God, the more we will be like him.

Our memory verse says: (Read 2 Cor. 10:12b). When we know we are weak, and we depend on God, God gives us his strength. And then we are strong! Let's all say the verse together. (Repeat verse with children). Let's pray now and ask God to give us power to do the things he wants us to do.

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?)

Now we have a short story to go with the lesson: (8) Toby and Nolan were walking in the woods one day. (9) All of a sudden they came up on a huge beetle! The beetle was turned on its back. Its little legs were waving wildly. It was trying to get on its feet again. Just as Nolan tried to help the little bug get on its feet again (point to hand), Toby's foot came crashing down on the helpless little bug! (Point to foot). Crunch! (10) "Why did you do that!" Nolan cried! I was trying to help the poor little bug! "I did it because I could!", answered Toby with a loud laugh. "That was mean!" Nolan cried. "Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should!" (11) Toby thought for a minute about what he did. "Yeah, I guess you are right. I should've used my power to help the little bug, like you were trying to do. I'm sorry." "Its o.k., Nolan said, "God will help you do the right thing the next time."

In this story, Toby used his power to be mean. But, Nolan was going to use his power to do good. Which boy was more like God? (Let children answer). Yes! God uses his power to be kind to us! He has the power to do anything he wants. But he uses his power to bring us peace and love! God uses his power to give us good things! God uses his power to help those who are helpless. He feels sad for those who are weak. (12 ) And, he loves to help those who ask for his help.

God wants us to use our power to be kind too. When we have a little brother or sister, we are bigger than them. And, we are stronger. (Make a muscle). We have the power to be nice or mean. What are some of the ways we could use our power to be kind to them? (Let children answer). Yes, we could help them get dressed. We could get them things they can't reach. We can share our toys. We can read Bible stories to them when we learn to read. We could let them tag along with us and play games with us. God wants us to be kind like him. God wants us to use our power to be help those who are weaker than us.

PRAYER: Allow children to pray after adult prays.
