What is God Like Series - Week 28 - God is So Good!

Concepts Children Learn: God is so good. He brings us only good, and no harm. He protects us from harm. He wants us to run to him to be safe.

Supplies Needed: Prep: Mark you bible with the memory verse: Psalm 34:8. and other verses used in the lesson: (Psalm 18:30, Psalm 34:4-5, Psalm 34:10). Print the b&w or color story pages. You may already have these pictures from previous weeks: 1bw, 2bw, 2color, 3bw, 3color, 4bw, 4color, 5bw, 5color, 6bw, 6color, 7bw, 8bw, 9bw, 9color, 10bw.

The numbers in parentheses tell you what Story Page to hold up while you are telling the story. (You don't need to read the words on the actual story pages. They are for use as posters or coloring pages). Only read words that are not in parentheses for the lesson. The words in parentheses tell you what actions you do. Emphasize words in italics; they are key concepts.

Key Bible Verse: Psalm 34:4-10, Psalm 18:30 . Other Scriptures used in lesson: as reference:

(Place a cookie in front of you, your assistant and the children. Ask them not to eat it until you tell them to). Intro: We all have a cookie. Now let's taste them to see how good they are. (Let everyone start eating their cookies). Oh- these are good! Yummy-good! (Give children a few minutes to finish their cookies; Wash their hands with wipes, and dispose of the trash to keep distractions to a minimum). I'm so glad I brought these cookies! Do you all like them? Did you know that the Bible tells us to taste something too? Listen to this verse: (Read Psalm 34:8). Taste the Lord? How can we do that? (1) We can see how good God is by staying close to him. When we come to know him and trust him, we see how good he really is!

Let's take a look at these pictures to learn more about how good God is. (2) Here's a little boy pretending to be a fireman. Who can tell me what a fireman does? (Let children answer). Yes, he protects us from fires by using his hose to put out the fires! (3) Here's' a little boy dressed up as a policeman. What does a policeman do? (Let children answer). He protects us from people who do bad things, and he helps us when we are in trouble. If you get lost, a policeman could help you find your way home. Both of these people protect us. But, did you know that there is someone who protects us even better than these people? Let's find out who that is: (Read Psalm 18:30). To take refuge means to run and hide to be safe. God is so good that he is the best one we could ever run to! We go to him and pray, and trust in him; And, he keeps us safe and protects us.

(4 and 5 - craft. Start with chick stickers on the background around the mother.) Here is an example: A mother hen keeps her little chicks safe under her wings. When a storm comes, the little chicks run to her and hide under her big wings. (Place all the chicks under hen's wing except one). There they are kept safe from the storm. They stay warm and dry. Uh-oh! This one didn't run to its mother. (Take off fluffy chick and replace with wet chick). Look what happened. Now he's wet and cold, and shivering because he didn' run and hide under his mother's wing. He didn't let her protect him. Its like that with God. He wants us to run to him and pray to him. He loves to protect us! We can trust him because he is so good to us. He brings us no harm, only good things. Let's put the little chick where he belongs. (Place the wet chick under mother's wing). There, now he will be safe under his mother's wing too.

Did you know that God is so good that he even protects us from shame and guilt? Psalm 34:4-5 tells us about this: (Read Psalm 34:4-5). Can any of you think of a time when you did something wrong? How did you feel? (Let children answer). (6) When we do wrong things, we feel bad. We want to hide and forget all about what we did. (7) But, if we run to God and talk to him about it; and ask him to forgive us, he does! And, he takes away our shame! Then we don't have to hide anymore. (8). We don't have to feel bad anymore. He protects us from those bad feelings too.

And God is so good that he even gives us a promise! (Read Psalm 34:10).(9) Lions are big, strong animals! They should be able to take care of themselves. But, even the big, strong lions get weak and hungry. But .we are not big or strong. (Shake head no). We need God! And when we run to God, he is our helper! He helps us not be afraid; He helps us do the right thing; And. he gives us everything we need! (10) No matter how much we grow up; No matter how big and strong we get, we will always need God. (1 again) Isn't it wonderful to know we can run to him when we're in trouble? We can run to him when we need his help. And, we can run to him when we just want to be close to him. Maybe we just want to sit and talk to him, or praise him. And, he promises that he wil give us everything we need when we look to him for help! Now lets have prayer time and thank God for his promise!

CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?) Combined with lesson (see above).

PRAYER: Allow children to pray after adult prays.
